Flag Day in the Desert. I read an article on the La Quinta City website about caring for our United States Flag. With the upcoming celebrations like Flag Day on June 14th and the 4th of July, it’s always good to remember how we should care for the United States Flag. Below is from their website:
How to Care for Your U.S. Flag
It is important to show respect for the U.S. Flag by keeping it in good condition. Harsh weather can damage the fabric so it’s best to keep it away from any conditions that could alter its integrity.
Weather
Display your flag on days where there is no rain, snow, or strong wind, unless you have an all-weather flag made of nylon, polyester, or other non-absorbent material. It is normal practice to bring your flag inside during inclement weather.
Rips and Tears
When displaying your flag outside, keep it away from anything that could cause wear. It is best to place it in an area that is free from objects that can cause rips or tears (rough surfaces, branches, wires, sharp lighting fixtures, etc.). In the event that your flag becomes torn, it is okay to repair it.
Cleaning
Should your flag become dirty, it is okay to machine wash it on a gentle cycle with mild soap and tumble dry on a low setting or lay it flat. Do not let your flag soak as the colors may run together depending on the fabric.
If your flag has a fringe, or if you’re worried about laundering the flag yourself, it is acceptable to have it dry-cleaned. Dry cleaning is also a good idea if you have an indoor flag that is not as durable as flags made of outdoor materials.
Note: It is just as disrespectful to fly a worn and tattered flag as it is to throw it away in the garbage. Take your flag down when it is too worn to display proudly and repair or replace with a new one when able. Visit the City of La Quinta’s page on how to properly dispose of your worn flag.
