The National REALTOR Association recently sent out a study of the costs of home remodeling projects vs Joy-specific home remodeling projects bring.

Those who remodeled their homes in 2020 spent upwards of $420 BILLION dollars on various projects. Generally, these were projects to upgrade outdated surfaces, finishes, and materials. Many upgraded to improve their current livability, and others just because it was time for a change. However, many in the Desert upgrade when they close on their desert home to make it more to their tastes.

The images below are from the 2022 Remodeling Impact Report by the National Association of REALTORS. The averages and amounts are nationwide and not specifically for the Coachella Valley.

Exterior Remodeling Projects

Before you start any project, even if it’s with a professional, you’ll want to make sure whether or not you need a permit for the work you need to do. Any work not done with an building permit may cause you problems at the sale of your property.

Permits are usually required when you move or demolish a load-bearing wall, change your roofline, add decks or even build a carport. You may even need a permit when installing a retaining wall that’s more than 4 feet tall.

Renovations that don’t usually require building permits are replacing flooring, replacing an existing sink, or changing out your appliances.

However, it’s always best to ask someone before you get started and it’s always safest to check with a professional before any work is started.

Each community has building codes and their way of issuing permits. It’s best to contact your local City or County building division to find out what your next steps are.
