Oswit Land Trust Acquires Mesquite Golf & Country Club. Oswit Land Trust (OLT) purchased the 18-hole, 180-acre Mesquite Golf Course and hopes to turn the course into a nature preserve. The course has deteriorated over the years and was listed for sale.
At this time, OLT saw an opportunity to turn the Golf Course into a preserve instead of developing it for 350 condos.
Jane Garrison, President of OLT, whose organization recently closed a deal on another significant parcel of land in the southern part of the city – 4,000 acres known as The Goat Trails – said OLT has been working for the past two years on securing the golf course land in hopes of kickstarting creation of a project known as Mesquite Desert Preserve. On July 26th, she said the project will now be named “Prescott Preserve.” (msn.com news)
Brad Prescott, Palm Springs philanthropist, purchased the Golf Club to donate to the OLT. Prescott said, “I see the desert slowly disappearing. I feel bad for the animals; they are being taken out of their habitat.” (amolivia.com)
The new Prescott Preserve’s plan is that this land would be combined with the neighboring Bel Air Greens, which closed in 2014 and has become quite a “neighborhood eyesore”. The plan is for both parcels to be transferred to an oasis in the desert with native plants and trees, walking paths for locals, educational signs, and community gardens. According to the Oswit Land Trust website, “Prescott Preserve, when completed, will be lush with native plants and trees and will be a spectacular place for both humans and wildlife. It will include a large butterfly garden, a native celebration garden to honor and remember loved ones, designated bird watching areas, floats for migratory birds, educational signage, walking paths and more!
We (OLT) will immediately begin applying for grants to plan and create the preserve. Existing golf cart paths will remain open to pedestrian traffic and leashed dogs during the planning and creating phase. The project starts with a full biological assessment of the property, followed shortly by the creation of a proposed map of the preserve that will be shared with the public.”

Announcement was Met with Mixed Reactions
There were mixed reactions to the homeowners surrounding the Mesquite golf course. Some are delighted with the land going back to nature with no further close-by construction. However, other homeowners fear the vacated ground may become new homes for vagrants.
So far, the HOA has had little information about the transition and plans for the Golf Course. “We have been communicating with (the owners) related to the poor conditions of the clubhouse, locker rooms, meeting rooms, restaurant facility, outdoor tennis courts, indoor racquetball courts and the golf course …,” the board wrote. “The Association has retained special counsel who recently sent a final demand letter to the Golf Course Owner requiring compliance with the lease obligations for the Property.” (msn.com news)
