The Palm Springs City Council is Pausing New Short-Term Rental Permits

The Palm Springs City Council is Pausing New Short-Term Rental Permits until November 30th to reflect and rework rental rules. The Council wants to focus on who qualifies for the short-term rental permits since the original rental rules went into effect in 2017 and a lot has changed since then.

“Ultimately, the goal is to prevent those who purchase homes in the city from using them solely as an investment with no intention of ever living here and establishing roots in the community.”

Changes that are being considered are to codify annual limits to how many times a home may be rented during the year along with owner occupancy as well as a “junior” permit to accommodate homeowners who rent their home during music festival weekends.

The pause will permit a Special Program Department to focus on gathering data to help city attorneys draft changes for The Palm Springs City Council to consider at their November meetings.

“This moratorium would help tremendously,” said Veronica Goedhart, the department’s director. “… If we rush it, it won’t be done right.” Palm Springs Post

As I posted earlier, other communities may follow suite with their short-term rental regulations. Suggestions to change the current short-term rental ordinance include “mandatory property inspections for those seeking a short-term rental certificate, new fines for violators and what Hildebrand has called a “three-strikes-and-you’re-out” rule where permits could be revoked after a third violation.” Initial fees suggested to increase from $250 to $740, with an annual renewal increase from $100 to $540.
