Do you lock your doors? That sounds like a strange question, but do you lock your doors when you step out for just a minute? Like when you go for a walk, run to the local gym to work out, or go to the grocery store to grab a gallon of milk? … it’s just around the corner.
Do you lock your doors when you are home? A recent Nationwide Insurance study found that 25% of people don’t lock their front door. However, most burglaries occur during the day between 10 am, and 3 pm, and most burglars walk right through the unlocked front door stealing thousands of dollars within minutes.
Another unlocked door often used by someone looking to enter your home uninvited and one of the major points of entry is your garage door. If they walk through your opened garage door or service side door, they automatically gain access to the inside of your house and able to walk right in.
Locking your front door is a good start to deter anyone from entering your home uninvited, but you’ll also want to lock your garage doors (all of them) and first-floor windows.
In addition to locking your doors, there are other ways to keep your home safe, whether you’re home or away.
Home Security System
Do you turn on your security system? A home with a security system makes you 300% less likely to be burglarized. However, as with an unlocked door, if it’s not turned on, it doesn’t work. If you don’t turn it on, you’re not alone. 20% of homeowners don’t turn on their security systems during the day, and they risk allowing an intruder in “unannounced”. A security system will not stop a break-in, but it could deter the intruder from stealing more of your items.
You know it’s always important to make your home look like you’re home when you’re away; however, it’s just as important to make sure your home is locked up and safe when you are.
